THRIPS MANAGEMENT
1) Managing thrips with a threshold
Onion thrips are best managed with an action threshold of 1 thrips per leaf. To learn more, click on the link above.
2) Managing thrips with reduced nitrogen
Research from mineral-based soil types revealed that onion thrips population growth may be slowed with reduced nitrogen fertilizer applications. While this is a potentially useful tactic in western onion production, it is not as useful in those northern systems which are dominated by muck onion production. BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t reduce your rates of nitrogen in muck, click on the link above to learn more.
3) New York State thrips scouting program
We often suggest that growers use threshold-based insecticide programs to manage onion thrips populations, but it is often easier said than done. In a three-year project we examined some of the challenges related to implementing threshold-based insecticide programs.
